Transcript:
My aim for today's lesson is for you to be able to know how you can extend your answer and for you to practice making your answer longer.
Before we start, let's think about this question,
What are the ways you can extend your answers in the IELTS Speaking Test?
In the IELTS Speaking Test, it is important to extend your answers. It is so important for you make your answer longer for to show the examiner your range of language
In Part 1 of IELTS Speaking Test, there are three ways in which you can extend your answers: giving reasons, giving examples, and stating preferences.
For this episode, we are going to look at one way to extend your answer which is giving of reasons and the expressions you can use with this.
Okay, now, here the expressions; that's the reason why, that's why, because, because of, as, and since
Okay, now let start with because.
He did it because he was told to.
People think I am okay because I don't complain.
Next expression is because of
This phrase is followed by a noun or a noun phrase.
For example,
She is here because of me.
He walked slowly because of his injured leg.
Next, as
I left the message as you were not around.
As I am new, I may need your help.
As it's raining again, we'll have to stay at home
Now let's move on to the next one which is since
Since it is raining, I am going to take an umbrella.
Next, since it's too late, I think we should stop now.
Next, sInce I don't speak Mandarin, we communicated in English
Next, since I am in a hurrry, we'll just talk tomorrow.
Next expression, that's why
This relative clause is very commonly used to express reasons especially in its short version.
I didn't know she was your sister that's why I didn't talk to her.
Your English is very good. Ah yes, I forgot. Your mother is English. That's why.
Next espression, that's the reason why
My car's broken, that's the reason why I came walking.
Next because,
He did it because he was told so.
And now, I will give you sample response with this and the question I am going to answer is this question, "What kind of weather do you like?"
Here is my response;
I really like the weather that is warm because I enjoy hiking, trekking, and climbing mountains. That's the reason why I like the warm weather.
So in this example you can see that in response to the question ‘What kind of weather do you like?’, I extended my answer by explaining why she likes ‘warm and sunny weather’ using ‘because’.
Now for you to practice extending your answer, you may answer the questions I'm going to give you using the expressions I provided. In your first response, you can say how much you like something and then give the reasons why you like it. In your next response, you can say you don't like it and give your rsponse why you don't like it.
Here are the questions;
- What do you like about living in your home town?
- Do you enjoy cooking? Why? Why not?
- Do you prefer home cooked or restaurant meals?
Okay, thank you for listening and please let those people know about this free lesson especially for those people are preparing for their IELTS test in the future. So see you for the next episode where we are going to focus on the other way you can extend your answer.
